Add new hive


This tutorial describes how to add a new hive:
  1. Open the Apiary Book app
  2. In the top left, tap Menu ≡
  3. Tap Hives
  4. In the top right, tap ADD
  5. Add number, no of frames, type, bottom, origin
  6. Record the status/strength of the hive or bee family
  7. Add date, hive state (active, stored), bee family source (purchased, own production), strength
  8. In the top right, tap ⁝ (option menu) 
  9. Choose Hive history
  10. Mark with a star (e.g. exceptional hive) or flag (e.g.to be inspected next time)
  11. Add label (without queen, varroa mites detected)

Bee families graph

In order to check the history of the total number of bee families in your apiary:
  1. Open the Apiary Book app
  2. In the top left, tap Menu ≡
  3. Tap Bee families report
  4. In the top right, tap ⁝ (option menu) 
  5. Choose Graph
  6. Scale on both axes (with touch-gesture, axes separately or pinch-zoom)
  7. Drag/ Pan (with touch-gesture)

CSV Export

Use the following instructions in order to export your data to CSV format.
  1. Open the Apiary Book app
  2. In the top left, tap Menu 
  3. Tap ToDo list
  4. In the top right, tap  (option menu) 
  5. Choose Export to save the list to CSV format (comma separated values)
  6. Choose application (e.g. Save to Drive) from Share dialog box
  7. Save the CSV file
  8. Open the CSV file with your preferred editor (e.g. WPS Office, Google Sheets) 


You can also print/export to pdf.

Management of multiple apiaries

Please use the following instructions to manage multiple apiaries/yards:

  1. Open the Apiary Book app
  2. In the top left, tap Menu ≡
  3. Tap on the arrow in the header
  4. Go to "Add apiary" and add your apiary/yard details OR 
  5. Go to "Manage apiaries" and add/modify/delete apiary/yard details

When you create an apiary it will be selected as a current apiary.


You can switch between apiaries:

  1. Open the Apiary Book app
  2. In the top left, tap Menu ≡
  3. Tap on the arrow in the header
  4. Tap on an apiary


All the info added in the application (hives, notes etc.) will be added for the current/selected apiary.

IMPORTANT: When you delete an apiary all related info (hives, notes etc) will be deleted!

Media gallery

Media gallery contains all your images and audio/videos recordings.

Take a photo or record audio/video using your phone or add existing images from your internal storage or SD card.
  1. Open the Apiary Book app
  2. In the top left, tap Menu 
  3. Tap Media Gallery
  4. Choose Photo to capture a photo using camera.
  5. Choose Video to record a video.
  6. In the top right, tap  (option menu) 
  7. Choose Image to add an existing image from your internal storage
  8. Choose Audio to record an audio note.

You can share or delete a media file if you perform a long-click (press and hold) on an item in the gallery.

QR Codes for hive identification

Use QR Codes for hive identification.
Using Apiary Book you can generate, print, detect and parse the QR code of your hive!

Hive 1-01

Generate a QR code for each hive and print it!
  1. Open the Apiary Book app
  2. In the top left, tap Menu 
  3. Tap Hives
  4. Tap on Hive 1-01
  5. In the top right, tap  (option menu) 
  6. Choose Barcode
  7. Print or Share the generated QR Code


Use this QR code to identify the hive.
  1. Open the Apiary Book app
  2. From Dashboard, tap Read barcode
  3. Tap to capture. Pinch/Stretch to zoom.
  4. If the barcode is detected successfully, the name of the hive is displayed together with the following actions: Hive, Inspection, Hive component, Graph

Actions:
  1. Hive - show hive details
  2. Inspection - add new inspection
  3. Hive component - add/remove frames, supers etc
  4. Graph - display strength history of the bee colony

The activities scheduled for current day and next day will be displayed as notifications at approximately 8:30 a.m.

Examples:
  1. add a treatment (for varroa mites), add reminder for next treatment in 2 weeks
  2. add an hive inspection (check if honey is enough for winter), add reminder for next inspection in 6 days (mold?)

Labels/categories for hives

Use labels to organize your hives into categories, like:
  • hive without queen
  • varroa mites detected, 
  • preparing for swarming
or any other category you want.

Add a label/category:
  1. Open the Apiary Book app
  2. In the top left, tap Menu 
  3. Tap Labels
  4. Press ADD
  5. Add Name (category)
  6. Add Description
  7. SAVE the label
Filter the list of the hives using a defined label in order to find out what hives needs your attention!
  1. Open the Apiary Book app
  2. In the top left, tap Menu 
  3. Tap Hives
  4. In the top right, tap  (list option menu) 
  5. Choose Label option
  6. Tap on the label from dialog box
  7. The list of hives is filtered

Strength of the hive or bee family

It is important to record each change of the status/strength of the hive or bee family. This monitoring will allow the beekeeper to take the proper actions (unification, treatment, queen change etc.)

Example:
Date: 01/06/2016, Hive state: Active, Bee family source: Artificial swarming, Strength: 25%, Weak
Date: 15/07/2016, Hive state: Active, Strength: 88%, Strong

Hive weight measurement

The measurement of hive weight provides useful insight into the condition and activities of the honey bee colony and the interaction of the bees with their environment.

Add a hive weight measurement:
  1. Open the Apiary Book app
  2. In the top left, tap Menu 
  3. Tap Hive Weight
  4. Press ADD
  5. Add Date of the measurement
  6. Add Quantity (kg, pound)
  7. Add Description (notes, comments, time of the day, weather)
  8. SAVE the Hive weight measurement

About Apiary Book

Apiary Book allows recording on mobile phone of information on the number, health and maintenance of each bees family, treatments carried out, and other operations in the field of beekeeping.


Using a friendly interface, a beekeeper can define several apiaries (hearths), can add work to be performed, harvests (honey, wax), colonies movements, veterinary controls and other.
